Our Principles
Efficiently Operate
Efficiently operate begins by looking to nature as a guide.
It is taking a whole system approach, creating cycles, relationships and networks so our wastes may become food for other parts of the social, environmental and economic system.

At Walker Industries, employees are encourage to look critically at their own work and make changes in the way they do things in order to operate more efficiently. Expanding our view of waste to include any human activity that absorbs resources but creates no value allows us to think creatively about how to operate more efficiently.

Nothing in Nature is exhausted in its first use. When a thing has served an end to the uttermost, it is wholly new for an ulterior service.
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Acknowledge Our Part
EARTH 1st starts with acknowledging our part.  Acknowledging our part is the first step to higher environmental performance.  As a company and as individuals we are part of the environment and the community.  We are the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food that we eat and the resources that we use.

As individuals and as a company we are dependent on the balance of nature's cycles and the resources that nature provides.  Every step that we take to create a healthy environment is a step to creating a healthy self and a sustainable company.

Tug on anything at all and you’ll find it connected to everything else in the universe.
~ John Muir

Reduce Our Impacts
Reducing our impact starts with an awareness of how we are performing and how we may interact with the environment.  Through awareness comes action and action creates change.  Understanding the environmental aspects and impacts of our operations provides opportunity to reduce our negative impacts and maximize our positive impacts.  The ultimate goal is to work harmoniously with the environment around us and within us.
Waste is any activity which absorbs resources but creates no value.
~ Taiichi Ohno

Take Time To Plan

Taking time to plan reflects the importance of being proactive rather than reactive.  Setting goals is an important part of taking time to plan.  In planning we want to define the problem completely, consider all the stakeholders and the interconnections between what is being planned, the community and the environment.  Successful planning considers preventive measures, creates the best possible solutions and usually solves more than one problem.  A good planning process involves continual improvement - plan, do, check, act.
You cannot solve a problem from the same consciousness that created it. You must learn to see the world anew.
~ Albert Einstein

Higher Environmental Performance
Higher Environmental Performance is the bottom line and goal of the EARTH 1st program. It is about continual improvement.  It is about consistently challenging ourselves to learn, to think about the possibilities and to share and build on our crazy ideas.  It is about celebrating our accomplishments, learning from our mistakes and responding to feedback from our stakeholders.  Higher Environmental Performance requires a diversity of thought and challenges us to take time to listen, adapt and excel.
The greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it
~ Michelangelo

1st Innovation and Leadership

It is our intention to be leaders and innovators in all the business sectors we are in.  To be leaders and innovators in our businesses requires us to encourage all members of the organization to be leaders and innovators. That means nurturing a workplace where all members feel a sense of belonging, participate in meaningful and respectful dialogue and understand the important role they play in shaping our future.

The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the world’s problems.
~ Mahatma Gandhi

The future belongs to people who see possibilities before they become obvious.
~ Ted Levitt
